Rugs and Carpets

Wool rugs and carpeting is beautiful, comfortable, and a wise investment. Forget the old adage that it is scratchy or fuzzy or that they are difficult to clean. Throw out every negative thing you may have heard about wool rugs and consider the real facts. Wool yarns are used to create some of the most visually appealing floor-covering in durable rugs (finished edge area or throw rugs) or carpets (broadloom/wall-to-wall) available today. To many designers wool is unquestionably the best choice for residential homes. Certainly wool rugs and carpets can be more expensive on their initial purchase than those made of other fibers because of their various textures, rich colors, superior appearance and natural durability. But if you were to break it down to years of use, wool is very easy on the budget.

rugs and carpet

When it comes to durability, it is hard to come up with an equal. What is in almost every old house museum around the world? At least one wool carpet. Many are hundreds of years old and still in fantastic condition. Reality is far better than any amount of manufactured product testing. The proof is there; wool lasts, is durable and looks good for many, many years.

Wool has the following inherent qualities:

- Naturally soil resistant.
- Simple cleanability.
- Excellent resiliency - recovers from crushing.
- Durable - the natural fiber structure allows wool to be abrasion resistant and have excellent flexibility.
- Excellent color retention.
- Multiple textural options.
- Naturally flame resistant.

When you use wool carpet in a wall to wall installation there is simply nothing more sumptuous under your toes. It is soft and warm. There is a comforting cushion of luxury as it squishes beneath your footsteps. Wool can be made very thick and maintain that thickness over many years. Many people are put off by fear that wool is -scratchy- but when they actually touch wool carpet they are pleasantly surprised by its softness. If you compare wool with any manmade fiber it always feels much better.

Wool carpets and rugs are more costly in their initial purchase however, the years of use they provide makes them a very wise investment and often the cost per year is much lower than that of a synthetic fiber rug or carpet. Wool takes and holds dyes beautifully which allows for rich colors. For many people wool has simply no equal when it comes to texture in both the yarn possibilities and the manufacturing (hand knotted, hand woven, hooked, or machine woven). The handcrafted aspect of many hand woven or knotted wool rugs also has the added benefit of being a beautiful piece of artwork.

Wool is simply the best and certainly one of the most -green- choices when it comes to a textile for flooring. Wool can be considered a renewable resource and environmentally friendly by a number of aspects. The fact that it is a natural fiber is something many people favor but the great part is that the natural lanolin on the sheep hair fiber make it naturally stain resistant and therefore no need to add some chemical to make it easy to clean.

Because of the handmade nature of many wool rugs it is important today to know what you are buying. When buying a wool rug for your home look for the RugMark seal. This is not only a symbol of quality but of social responsibility. When a product has a RugMark seal you can be confident that it was not made with child labor and it was made in a factory or on looms where working conditions are humane. A portion of the sale of a RugMark product goes to help build schools and educate children who would have otherwise been victim of exploitative child labor practices.

Wool rugs and carpets add quality and distinction to any home interior. They offer endless choices in color, patterns and texture. If you want an area rug or carpet to last, be easy to clean, look fantastic over time your only choice is wool.

The Perfect Wool Area Rug

Author: admin  //  Category: rugs

There are quite a lot types and styles of wool area rugs that can confuse you while choosing the perfect one for your home. You should consider many things and be aware of the qualities of wool rugs before purchasing one.

the perfect wool area rug

If you really want a genuine wool rug for your family and home, first make sure it is made of 100% wool, not some artificial wool imitating fibers. Pay attention to the manufacturer – if it is a reputable company, the size of the carpet and the price corresponding to that size. Do not let be tricked by some cheap wool area rug that later turns out to be a mat or a too small floor covering rug.

Have you ever imagined how healthy wool rugs actually are? If you have never realized their wonderful properties before, I suggest you to do it now and find out why wool area rugs are perfect for you, your family and home.

As wool is a natural and one of the oldest textile fibers even known, it has survived the test of time for quality, strength, durability, as well as isolation, elasticity, purity and healthiness.

  • Wool is naturally fire resistant and water repellent. So every wool rug is capable of absorbing air moisture, while safely repelling liquids and makes it easier for you to clean and take care of your wool rug.
  • Wool is naturally elastic and can wear quite long, even a life time and more. And wool rugs are durable enough to keep their great new-looking appearance for years on end.
  • Wool is wonderful isolator against cold floors and the noisy neighbors from downstairs. You can also use wool rugs for the walls – there are some specially designed for walls and they surely isolate against all kinds of noise. Although it may sound too luxurious, it is truly effective and can warm any room’s atmosphere in no time.
  • I kept the best quality of wool area rugs for last – their successful resistance to all kinds of dirt and ability to stay clean longer. That is due to the crimp in the wool fiber and the scales on the outside of the fiber that assist in keeping the dirt from penetrating the surface, while this makes the cleaning of the wool carpet a lot easier.
  • Wool rugs are perfect for home environment and very commonly recommended for baby’s nursery rooms, as they are popular for their ability to continually purify indoor air. What’s more they can do that for as long as 30 years or more, which is absolutely incredible ability. That makes wool area rugs perfect not only for nurseries, but for your kid’s room or bedroom, for your family bedroom or living room.

But that’s not all. Persian wool rugs are able to rapidly absorb some of the most common indoor air contaminants such as paint, cooking and furniture. Which proves once again that wool rugs are perfect for your entire home: from the kitchen and bathroom, to the baby’s room and bedrooms.

Being very strong and durable all Persian, sisal or braided wool rugs are great compliment to any high traffic area in your home.

100% wool rugs are all natural and made without chemicals, which makes them completely biodegradable. Having a wool area rug in your home you make sure that your indoor air stays free of many harmful pollutants and will not re-emit them back in the air. You and your family will enjoy the fresh air for years on end, while your feet will feel soft and warm with your Persian wool, or may be wool sisal or braided rug.

    Choosing rugs for modern house

    Author: admin  //  Category: rugs

Just a few years ago there was and opinion that rugs and carpets are reserved for houses in traditional style – usually because of their classic designs. But nowadays it is said that modern interior decor can’t exist without modern rugs. Probably the producers of mats, carpets and rugs decided that it is time for a change. And that’s why they’ve changed their assortment into something with more modern designs. This was a reason of giving mats and rugs a second chance – even in modern and very fancy houses.

    Choosing rugs for modern house

Very popular are these days carpets with long hair. But some people should remember that they might not be very practical. Especially when a person have a dog or don’t like vacuuming to much. That’s only an example showing that choosing the right floor covering should be done wisely. Our taste is not the only element that we should think of while designing our floor. One of most important matters is fabric that our carpet is made of. For example more and more popular are getting now wool, sisal and sea grass. Even if the last two aren’t a typical materials for making rugs. Many people prefer having ecological interiors rather than having carpets made of artificial textiles. Even if the look of the room might sometimes suffer.

For some people more important is a matter of cleaning the fabric that was putted on the floor. That’s why they decide for having washable rugs. It’s sometimes hard to find such rugs that can be cleaned with water and also may be fasten permanently. A good alternative for that is having small colorful mats on the floor covered with panels. It is very similar to what we usually have in the kitchen – washable kitchen rugs and tiled floor under it.

As it comes to colors of carpets it’s of course a mater of taste. But this season most popular are melange textiles. They seem as one colored textile but they break light in an interesting way. It is better to have few samples before we buy it. Something that is popular in particular season for modern houses might not match the particular modern house.

Choosing the right rugs to modern houses shouldn’t be that hard this season. There is a much wider choice and greater selection than ever before.

    Wool Rugs The Sultans Choice

    Author: admin  //  Category: rugs

You have one of two choices for quality rugs, really; there is wool, and everything else. Wool has been the standard of quality and durability for thousands of years. Wool is one of the most durable fibers on the planet; it sheds water, it holds dye extremely well, and it’s fire retardant. It’s not uncommon to see wool rugs handed down through the generations, and wool rugs are commonly found that are hundreds of years old. Wool’s unique properties mean that often, these rugs look better after a century of use than they do when they’re first woven.

    wool rugs

Wool is extremely dense, which means that you can place a wool rug on sandy ground, and when you’re done, just dust it off. As a matter of fact, this is what Persian rug makers have been doing since the advent of rug making. Wool rugs were the flooring of choice in the nomadic tents of the Persian tribesmen, for just that reason. They don’t mildew or stain easily, and they are extremely durable. They can absorb the heaviest humidity, keeping rooms cooler and more comfortable for occupants.

Because of wool’s long history and heavy demand in the rug trade, rug makers have had to find alternative sources for their wool. Sheep are, of course, the wool of choice, but rug makers have also been using the increasingly popular Alpaca wool to supplement their wool of choice. It’s even becoming popular to mix the two creating a blend that is easy to maintain, and beautiful to look at!

    Area Rugs and Flooring

    Author: admin  //  Category: rugs

Over the years, a debate has taken place in the flooring
industry over the impact its products have on the
environment. In 2003, a group of industry researches and
technical specialists met at the University of North Carolina
to examine the science with regard to the positive or
negative attributes of materials found in products like
    carpeting, area rugs and linoleum.

    area rugs and flooring

The panel looked at hundreds of studies in relation to how
carpet and non-carpet materials contribute to environmental
quality and whether there’s a significant concern with toxic
substances and allergens alleged to have commonly been
    found.

The intention of the researchers was to try and settle years
of anecdotal evidence and set an industry standard to help
buyers and sellers of flooring products. A good portion of the
information reviewed came from the Environmental
Protection Agency, the National Health Science Libraries,
and other previously published industry experts.

A review of all of the literature led to one major conclusion:
materials found in flooring “play a significant role to the
quality of life indoors.” It contributes to healthy design
factors, safety, aesthetics, climate control, ergonomics and
physical comfort. When maintained properly, carpeting and
area rugs are not at all risks to public health.

While the group’s conclusion was great news for the
industry and the public, it’s still necessary to examine
flooring’s impact on the whole environment, including the
part played by rugs and flooring made from natural
    materials.

Decorating Like Darwin: By Natural Selection

With so many types of area rugs available today, it’s hard
enough to make a style selection, let alone having to take
health and environmental concerns into account. Keeping
rugs clean and in good condition will go a long way in
alleviating any concerns. Area rugs do have material
differences, though. Here’s a quick look at natural fiber rugs
    and other natural flooring:

    WOOL RUGS

    wool rugs

Water, water everywhere, so keep it away from wool. Water
is one of the biggest enemies of wool rugs. Wool, popular in
Oriental rugs, has a high moisture regain and is
susceptible to microorganism attack. That may sound like
the bad plot to a Hollywood horror film or an episode of Fear
Factor. Nevertheless, keep something that requires water,
like potted plants, off of wool rugs.

Water aside, wool’s long, coarse fibers have the ability to
maintain indoor air quality and, unlike synthetic fibers, can
absorb indoor contaminants. Since discarded carpet
accounts for a tremendous amount of waste – 4.7 billion
pounds in 2002 according to the EPA – any rug that lasts
longer, like a hand-knotted wool rug, is going to get the seal
of approval from the Green Party.

    JUTE RUGS

    jute rugs

Once used primarily as carpet backing, Jute has made it to
the big time. As a full-fledged member of the area rug and
carpet family, Jute, which ranges from light tans to browns,
is one of the finest and softest of natural floor covering
    materials.

Composed mainly of plant materials, Jute is a rainy season
crop that grows best in warm, humid climates like parts of
China and India. While it may grow in rainy weather, the Jute
rug won’t stand up to areas with high moisture levels. Unlike
wool, jute is resistant to microorganisms, but the material
will in fact deteriorate rapidly when exposed to moisture.

    BAMBOO RUGS

    bamboo rugs

Gilligan’s Island no longer corners the market on bamboo
flooring. You don’t need to live in a hut to use this material.

Bamboo, which 1ff8 is also a trend in cutting boards and
hardwood floors, has become a popular option for area
rugs. And its environmental friendliness is obvious. No
trees to cut down, no waste. Bamboo is technically a grass,
and moreover a highly renewable resource. Maturing in less
than six years, bamboo is harvested over and over from the
same plants. Its strength combined with a natural beauty
can add a contemporary touch to any living space.

    SEAGRASS RUGS

    seagrass rugs

Seagrass is not something you may have thought was
illegal. You can’t grow it in your backyard, but it does look
great in the house. Created from tropical grass mainly
imported from China, Seagrass, which only comes in a
natural organic green color, is smooth to the touch and
    extremely durable and stain resistant.

    SISAL RUGS

    sisal rugs

Sisal is another natural fiber that has recently gained
popularity among designers. The material is derived from a
cactus plant, grown in semi-arid regions liked Brazil and
    Africa.

Sisal is stronger and more durable than other natural fibers,
making its staying power ultra-environment friendly. Water is
not Sisal’s friend, either. The rug should never be used in
the bathroom or other moist areas of the house.

    CORK FLOORING

    cork flooring

Now you may be thinking how a rug is made from cork?
Well, it’s not. Cork has been slipped in to this discussion
simply because it can be considered a cousin in the natural
fiber family. Used as durable hardwood-type flooring, the
cork tree is the only one whose bark can regenerate itself
after harvest without damaging the tree or the environment.
The tree is never killed or cut down and can produce bark for
centuries. Furthermore, almost all of its harvested materials
    are put to use.

Cork is known for its sound environmental policy, and when
feet hit the floor, it’s known for its durability. Cork may seem
elastic when compared to wood, but its “natural memory
ability” and resistance to liquid penetration can make it an
    attractive alternative.

    LINOLEUM FLOORING

    linoleum flooring

This is no joke. Linoleum is back. So break out the disco
ball and platform shoes. Vinyl nearly sent linoleum to the
flooring scrap yard, but just like bell-bottoms, linoleum is
making a comeback. It’s contemporary and gets the green
seal. While vinyl is synthetic and petroleum-based, linoleum
is made entirely of natural materials, linseed oil being the
    main ingredient.

The resurgence of natural and retro products is behind
linoleum’s rebirth. As a natural product, linoleum can be
recycled and is hypoallergenic, which benefits those who
suffer from allergies or asthma. Linoleum also contains
antibacterial properties that help stop the growth of
    microorganisms.

Area Rugs Make Your Home Feel Like a Palace

    Author: admin  //  Category: rugs

Whether your floor is wood, tile or carpet, an area rug can be a fabulous addition to your interior design. Area rugs come in many shapes, sizes and patterns to enhance any home decor. Knowing a few facts will help you shop intelligently, so you can purchase good quality rugs that will meet your needs and look good for years, decades or even centuries to come.

    Area rug buying tips

You have two choices, buy for decor or buy as an investment. Area rugs can be a great investment item; some centuries-old Oriental or Persian rugs are antiques valued at thousands of dollars. (Yes, it’s a very long term investment!) If you’re buying an antique wool rug to finance your retirement, you’ll want to take extra special care of it–the condition 30 years from now will be a major factor in its value. If you’re buying accent rugs, runners or area carpets to compliment your furniture or make the house look classier, buy something you enjoy looking at and walking on great.

    area rugs

The traditional designs, often called Persian or Oriental, sometimes called tribal, are frequently ornate floral patterns. Newer rug styles may be described as casual, contemporary, country or transitional; many are updates of traditional designs or inspired by those designs. Casual, modern or novelty rugs have no rules; they are whatever the artist envisions them to be, from bright geometric shapes to animal skin designs. Outdoor rugs are those designed to stand up to weather, sun and other rough treatment. There’s no right choice, except to choose the design you like, one that fits your decor scheme.

Be careful about rugs identified as Isfahan, Tabriz, Senna or other locales; these cities are centuries-old rug-making cities, but an unscrupulous or uneducated dealer could be talking about style, not actual place of origin. That said, good-quality, economical alternatives to real traditional rugs, in authentic styles and patterns, are being made in India and China.

Fit, of course, includes size. The basic rule of thumb is 18 to 24 inches of floor around the rug, meaning 9 to 12 inches or more between the rug and each wall. You should arrange the furniture before you choose the rug; you want furniture legs to be on or off the rug, not half-n-half. If placing a rug under a table or bed, get a rug that’s big enough: The rug should form a 12-inch border around a twin or full bed; 18-inch for a queen or king and 24-inch around tables. For tables, be sure the chairs will stay on the rug even when pulled out so you can sit down.

When you have the right rug, you may want a rug pad. Like padding under carpet, it makes the rug more comfortable to walk on, and it helps prevent movement on slick surfaces like polished wood or 1ff8 tile — a must-have safety feature!

    Area rug fabrics

Silk is used in the highest-quality rugs; it is actually stronger than steel strand-for-strand and holds dyes like nothing else. Silk is frequently blended with wool for added luster and shine and a reduced price. Area rugs containing silk must be handled with special care–never clean it yourself. A lot of “synthetic silk” rugs are being sold; that’s double-talk for mercerized cotton or polyester, not silk.

Wool rugs have been popular for centuries because of their durability and luster — key elements in high-quality rugs. Wool lasts longer and looks better than anything except silk and wool is more affordable. Wool does come in different grades and, of course, the finer the wool, the better (and pricier) the area rug. Wool-synthetic blends are also available–good quality at a lower price.

Cotton is more barefoot-friendly and less costly than wool, but nowhere near as durable and does not have the same appearance. Wool-cotton blends are more affordable, but still look good.

Nylon or other synthetic fibers are very cost-effective, great for high traffic areas and may even be machine washable.

    Area rug care

Most area rug cultures are also no-shoes-in-the-house cultures. Imagine walking barefoot over grass versus concrete. That’s how your rug feels about hard-soled shoes (especially high heels) versus socks.
The best rug cleaning plan is never to need it. Bare feet and socks track in less dirt, making life easier all around. (Besides, rugs feel better that way.) Don’t over clean floor rugs like carpets. High-traffic wool area rugs need an annual professional cleaning, plus the occasional thorough vacuuming. The rug less traveled may only need a good, professional scrub once or twice per decade.

Of course, accidents happen, especially with small children and pets. Urine is the worst–it doesn’t just look and smell bad, it can chemically damage your rug. With any spill, act fast. Blot up the liquid with towels, soak the spot in a water-vinegar mix or commercial spot remover (which you previously tested to be sure it won’t do more harm than good) and let it dry. Then clean it again with a mild rug shampoo and let it dry. If that doesn’t do it, call in a professional.

Speaking of professionals, if a rug is damaged, it can often be repaired, but this is not a do-it-yourself project. Go to a real rug maker for conservation and restoration.

    Area rug terminology

Whole books can be written on area rugs, a practice which has a language all its own. For most consumers, just a few key terms are need-to-know:

    Warp, Weft and Selvage

The rug design is made by weaving knotted threads onto a foundation (like the canvas on a painting): Warp are the threads forming the length and the end fringes. Weft are shorter threads forming the width and the selvage. Selvage is the side weave that gives strength to the rug.

    Antique versus Contemporary

Antique rugs must be over 60 years old, though some dealers won’t sell anything short of 100 years old as antique. Contemporary rugs may feature traditional or modern designs, they are increasingly popular for modern decor; bright colors and unusual shapes give them a pop art feel.

    Oriental or Persian rugs

Produced in Asia, these hand-knotted rugs have up to 1,000 knots per square inch. The terms are used synonymously by most people, though they may come from any part of the Middle East, India or even China.

    Pile, nap or face

The visible surface of the rug; the material knotted onto the warp and weft to produce the pattern.

    Shag

That deep pile, popular carpet of the 1970s is back, featuring better materials and long, thick fibers that provide excellent insulation and a high bare toes coziness index.

    Area rug questions and answers

Can I get rugs in a set?

Yes, you can. Typical sets include large area rugs for use in the living or family room, smaller accent rugs for a conversation nook, and rug runners, usually placed along walls or in halls.

    Are all area rugs rectangular?

In times past, yes, but modern rugs (or contemporary rugs) can be round, oval, square, even octagonal.

Can I put rugs in any room?

Just about; rugs come in sizes from very small to absolutely huge. Easy-care materials like cotton or nylon are wonderful for bathroom or kitchen rugs. Stepping out of the shower onto a luxurious, deep-pile shag rug can be a great antidote for mornings.

    Will it match?

Spend once, save much. In other words, people needlessly stress over that great decorator’s question. If you buy it all at the same time, the answer is, “Absolutely!” Area rugs don’t have to match exactly, but they should be complimentary; get rugs with similar patterns, colors or proportions.

Choose it carefully, take good care of it and you will have a beautiful area rug that will enhance your home for decades.

Sell Your Oriental Rug or Persian Rug

    Author: admin  //  Category: rugs

Many individuals find themselves with a rug that is no longer wanted. This occurs either through inheritance, evolution of personal taste or just plain error in making a purchase because it was such a good “deal”.

    oriental rug and persian rug

    Here’s a secret.

No one give away good rugs. Don’t be lured by the cliché “GOING OUT OF BUSINESS SALE”. If the deals offered were really that great you’d see rug dealers there first, ahead of you in line!

If you find yourself in the position of having an Oriental or Persian rug that you no longer need or want, here are a few of your choices.

    1) Sell it yourself by running an ad in a local newspaper or posting photos with prices on various local bulletin boards. Also, mention to your friends and associates that you have an Oriental rug for sale and have a picture with you at all times.

    2) Take a digital photo and list it on one of the many online venues that are free such as Craiglist. Indicate price as [Paid $2200, price negotiable] and list all the benefits of the rug such as; great condition, lovely colors, unusual design or whatever you feel is good about the piece. Be flexible on the price as you are only offering a choice of one. Clear, full view photos and a close up or two go a long way in inspiring someone to find out more about your rug!

    3) Find a local rug store with a merchant and see if this person would like to purchase it from you outright. If not, check to see if he/she sells rugs on consignment. Ensure you establish the reputation of anyone you leave your rug with and agree upon an exact amount. Get a receipt and also a written agreement that states the merchant will pay you upon the sale of your rug within a specified time. Do not agree on a percentage basis as any negotiation that goes on in the sale of your rug will lower the dollar amount coming to you.

    4) If you are in the market for a new rug, take the rug you no longer want and see if the dealer will take as a partial credit toward your purchase.

I recommend you ask for a little more that you are willing to sell it for just to be on the safe side but don’t go overboard on your asking price. Why? Simply because if your potential customer is going to pay top dollar for your rug, they may decide to purchase a rug at a reputable gallery where they will have many choices of quality pieces.

If you are really unsure of the value of a piece, you can always get a professional appraisal but ensure you get this from someone that is certified and NOT the same person you would sell it to. I only recommend the appraisal for potentially high valued antique pieces.

If you have no success with any of the above methods, you can always donate your rug to a nonprofit as many of them have annual auctions. You will not only be helping the nonprofit of your choice but also get a tax deduction in the process.

Shirred rag rugs have different strips of fabric sewn together artistically in a network of rows and columns. Braided rugs are made up of color or multi-colored braids or threads.

¨Bearskin rugs: These rugs have derived their name from the fact that the material used in the making of this rug is similar to a bear’s skin in appearance.

Among all the materials, nylon rugs are preferred due to their durability and ability to retain color after long usage.
